Gatwick Airport have launched a consultation that impacts departure route 4 which comes over the estate. For more information please click the link below

Following the planning enquiry requested by Solum (owned by Kier Property and Network Rail) which ran from September to November 2025 the outcome has now been decided.
The inspector following a review of all the fact refused the application.
Special thanks go to Reigate & Banstead Borough Council, Redhill Residents Action Group for their work defending the councils decision to initially refuse this with over 2,000 objections. In addition to the expert witnesses, a number of local individuals including Whitebushes resident Robin Whitwell, Councillors Stephen McKenna and Jonathan Essex, Surrey Coalition of Disabled people, Shop mobility, Redhill Reigate and District Rail Users Group and others made statements and were cross examined by the UK’s leading planning barrister.
Please note that railway engineering works are currently over running and that on Monday 19th Network Rail expect major disruption with no services planned to operate from Earlswood or Salfords railway stations at time of posting.
Additionally more engineering works have been scheduled for next weekend.

Next step for local government reorganisation in Surrey⏱️
Government has confirmed that elections for the new East Surrey and West Surrey unitary councils will go ahead in May 2026.
Reigate & Banstead residents will have the opportunity to vote for who you want to represent East Surrey, which will cover the areas of Elmbridge, Epsom and Ewell, Mole Valley, Reigate & Banstead and Tandridge councils.
You’ll vote from your local polling station. We’ll provide full details as they are confirmed.
The councillors elected in May 2026 will work as part of 'shadow authorities' for one year alongside the existing councils to oversee the transition to the new governance arrangements.
They will then continue to represent East Surrey and West Surrey beyond April 2027, when the two new unitary authorities officially take over delivering all local services for each area.
Your existing county, borough and district councillors will represent you until 31 March 2027 as we continue to deliver your services in the current council set up until the transfer.

Help in the bushes are pleased to advise you that the building at Nutfield has been made safe and the A25 between Redhill and Nutfield has reopened.
Metrobus services have returned to their normal routes with the exception of in Godstone where the sink hole road closure remains in place.

Due to a building being damaged the A25 has been closed between Redhill and Nutfield to all traffic and could be closed until 26th January. The reason for the closure is to ensure that the building is structurally safe before allowing vehicles and pedestrians to pass close to it.
Traffic congestion must be likely and this will extend no doubt to a number of country lanes.
Buses have today been on diversion with the 410 going through Earlswood and the 400 using the A23, Shepherds Hill, Merstham to reach Caterham via Chaldon. Please check the Metrobus app or website before you travel.

Salfords and Sidlow Parish Council have shared the following news re Three Arch Road roadworks:
As part of Surrey County Council’s commitment to improving roads and pavements, Three Arch Road has been selected for carriageway patching works.
The work will take place Monday 19 January for 2 days – working hours: 10am to 4pm.
Delays Possible whilst works are carried out from east of junction with Bushfield Drive.
SCC will make sure you can get to and from your house or business when it is safe to do so. Please talk to a member of staff on site if you need help – they are keen to deliver the work with minimal disruption to you.
It is essential to keep the road free from parked vehicles to enable the work to proceed as planned. The work is weather dependant and can be delayed by bad weather or other factors. Please look at our information boards on site for date changes.
Help in the bushes will update this page when we know what impact this will have on buses services on the estate.

Since late evening the Virgin Media television and broadband service on Whitebushes has been down. Updates with latest news first follows:
Update 09:25 Some homes now back on line.
Update 08:30 I have just spoken to Virgin Media about the TV and Broadband outage. They have informed me that service issues are likely to be resolved by 16:00/16:15 today.
They did mention upgrades to Fibre optic cables however the online update fails to mention any planned works. Also I have pointed out that if disruption is expected due to planned works that it is unfair on customers to not have notice of that outage especially when the broadband outage will prevent those that work from home from working.
I did also mention that compensation should be offered as this is a prolonged outage and was informed the bill will be adjusted to reflect the period of service disruption.
Update 06:30. Since late yesterday evening the Virgin Media broadband connection has been out of service for a number of local residents. Due to them sending the TV signal over the internet this is also impacted.
Please note that Virgin Media phone lines will be open:
Mon - Fri 08:00 - 21:00
Sat & Sun 08:00 - 18:00
Virgin Media:

or 150 from a Virgin Media phone

Just a reminder if you have not expressed an opinion on local Government reorganisation you have until 5pm on 16th January to submit your feedback.
Under the new unitary council we will see a reduction on
the number of councillors compared to the current two tier local government (Borough/District and county councils). If there is support for a town or parish council these councillors would be able to provide local support and be a statutory consultees as well as plead the case for community infrastructure levy spending in the local area plus much more.

Dear Customer
You may have already heard on the TV, radio or social media that Storm Goretti is on the way. The Met Office has issued a weather warning for strong winds and snow in parts of South East and East of England from Thursday into Friday.
Our electricity network is built to be resilient but bad weather can bring down trees, damaging overhead power lines and potentially causing power cuts.
As a household that is registered to our free Priority Services Register, we want to make sure you know how you can contact us in a power cut and give you some tips on how you can prepare.
We're prepared
We know that storm conditions can be a worrying time for our customers, so we have put a range of measures in place to ensure we’re ready for any impact on the electricity network.
We’ve got additional staff in our contact centre and more engineers on the ground, to help fix power cuts and keep our customers updated. Watch our video to find out more.
Tips on how you can prepare in case you have a power cut:
It's really important that we hold the correct information and contact details for you, including a mobile telephone number (if you have one). This will help us contact you in the event of a power cut and provide you with extra support tailored to your individual needs. Update your details here: ukpowernetworks.co.uk/psr-update-form

With 2026 now here we would like to invite you to join us for a cuppa at the Whitebushes Village Hall on the dates on the attached poster.

Please note that the charge for using the drop off zone at Gatwick Airport has now increased.
Want a way to avoid the fee?
The Longstay car park allows you to park for free for up to 2 hours.
If you are using Longstay South Terminal on exiting the car park and joining the ring road you need to get over to the right lane taking the turning just before the Hilton Hotel to avoid the charging zone.
Please remember that camera enforced red routes operate on airport owned roads.

Railway improvement work – Earlswood, Salfords and Horley
We are writing to inform you that essential track repairs and replacements will be carried out near your property from Monday 5 January to Friday 27 March 2026.
Our contractor, VolkerRail, will be replacing approximately 4 km of rails, sleepers, and ballast stone. The main works will take place over three weekends:
While every effort will be made to limit noisy activities to daytime hours, some night-time noise may be unavoidable due to scheduling constraints. We sincerely apologise for any disruption this may cause.

With Local Government reorganisation approaching this is an opportunity to speak to local councils and council officers at a public meeting.

Planning a journey over the festive season please click the link below to find out about planned changes and use the journey planner.

Surrey Police today have announced plans to open a new police Station with counter at Perryoaks industrial estate in Salfords.
This will be replacing the Reigate police station that was closed a couple of years ago due to RAAC concrete issues with the counter moved to Caterham and the operating based temporarily to the Fire HQ.

From 1st January 2026, a small number of day fares across Metrobus services will be updated. These changes help ensure fares remain fair and provide good value for passengers.
Single fares and longer ticket types, from 7-day to annual, have not changed and remain at their current prices
Please note that the metrovoyager ticket is a multi journey ticket valid on all Metrobus services. These can present saving when completing as few as 4 journeys. different pricing applies to cash verses app via the Metrobus key card fares

The last Community Cuppa of 2025 will be taking place this coming Saturday at Whitebushes Village Hall from 11:00 - 12:30.
All area welcome.
If we don’t get a chance to see you this Saturday we will be back on the third Saturday of the month in 2026 but wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year in the meantime.

From 6th January 2026 the fee for dropping off at Gatwick will be increasing to £10 for upto 10 minutes.
To avoid the charge you can pick up and set down at the Longstay car park for free if you are there for less than 2 hours including the free bus transfer to and from the terminal.
If using the South Terminal Longstay car park you must when rejoining the one way system move over to the right and take the turning before the Hilton Hotel otherwise the fee is payable.
Red route camera enforcement is in place with additional mobile camera vehicles also deployed.
If you decide to us the shortstay car parks please remember to enter the multistorey car park to pick up or drop off as the road linking the car park is a no stopping area which is enforced by cameras.
Too much hassle let the bus take the strain:
Route 100 serves both terminals
Routes 400,420,422,460 all serve the South Terminal (A23 stop). If heading South this sets down by the lifts to the transit station allowing you easy access to both terminals. Northbound services at the south can be accessed by the underpass or if arriving at the South terminal the lifts by Gregs and Pret take you to the bus stop for services back into Surrey

If you vote by post, remember that you need to re-apply every three years.
If we’ve written to you about the changes, make sure to take action, otherwise your postal vote will expire.

Please note that our Community Centres at Woodhatch, Horley and Banstead will be closed for the Christmas holidays from Saturday, 20 December, until Sunday 4 January.
They will reopen on Monday, 5 January.

Help in the bushes are pleased to share the news from Metrobus that this year there will be a number of routes operating on Christmas and Boxing Day including a special timetable for both the 100 between Redhill and Crawley Bus Station and 400 between Stone Quarry (East Grinstead) and Redhill bus station

Please note that network rail is reporting engineering works over the festive period as well as service suspensions on Christmas Day. If travelling from 20/12/2025 to 5th January please check before you travel on either the network rail or train operators websites.
Also new time tables are due to come into effect from 15th December.

Reigate and Banstead Borough Council wishes to advise residents of revised collections ver the festive season.
Please note the 2 week usual suspension of garden waste collections from Thursday 25th December.
Whilst Thanks giving day is an American holiday it seems fit to take the opportunity to thank all the visitors to the site for their support.
Over the last 12 months we have seen the community cuppa continue to flourish at the village hall on the third Saturday of the month.
The Kiln Community Gardens team and Whitebushes pond restoration team continue their work to provide nice community spaces for us to enjoy. Don’t forget the pond restoration team will be working on the pond on Saturday 6th December so please feel free to pop by and have a chat or if you can lend a hand. We hope to also have an announcement to make about the pond shortly.
We look forward again to our Christmas Tree Lighting evening in a couple weeks time at The Brow by our community’s local shop (on 11th December - see events page).Students from Salfords Primary School will be entertaining us with Christmas Carols at this event.
We have the last of the 2025 Community Cuppa’s on Saturday 15th December at the village hall on the junction of Three Arch Road and Bushfield Drive. Thanks to support from Raven Housing Trust we have secured funding for the 2026 dates.
We secured funding for a raised flower bed just off Bushfield Drive that thanks to residents of the adjoining block of flats secured a place on the finalist list of Raven Housing Trust’s ”Raven in bloom” competition.
We called on Southern Housing to get a replacement noticeboard by the shop and are working on using these to also raise awareness of the events on the estate. We would love to see even more people in 2026 getting involved in the community. It is a great way to get to know your neighbours from across the estate and help others avoid potential social isolation. Working together our voices can be louder. On this subject we are pleased to announce the new notice board is now in place complementing the noticeboard at the junction of Bushfield Drive and Edgefield Close which Raven Housing Trust supplied.
We have behind the scenes also been calling on Metrobus to increase the frequency of buses onto the estate following the withdrawal of the 420 but ask residents to help us in this case by where possible using the bus stops on Bushfield Drive and Spencer Way to generate the data to show that Whitebushes residents support the bus service as seen with 10 passengers alighting from one rush hour service yesterday at Bushfield Way. Every time we use the hospital bus stop this counts as a hospital statistic and therefore we cannot ask them to reflect on that as potential Whitebushes residents supporting their services. We have also highlighted significant concerns on the two hourly service on Sundays and public holidays to/from Crawley asking that this is enhanced over a longer part of the day with and hourly Crawley bus during the day serving the estate to help those working at the airport.

We are seeing a rise in catalytic converter thefts across east Surrey. This is a metal device that sits under your car near the engine and helps to clean exhaust fumes. Your car insurance isn’t valid without one, and they’re crucial to the smooth running of your vehicle.
Catalytic converters are stolen because they contain valuable metals such as platinum, rhodium or palladium. Hybrid vehicles such as Lexus are particularly at risk because their catalytic converters are less frequently exposed to hot exhaust gases and the metals stay in better condition for longer, making them more valuable when sold on.
To deter potential thieves, park close to building entrances or the nearest road in public car parks, so that your car is more visible to passers-by and less likely to be an attractive target for thieves. Consider investing in a video doorbell, CCTV and motion sensor lighting for the front of your property that can double as a burglary deterrent.
If you see what you think is a catalytic converter theft in progress (car jacked up on the street or in car parks, loud sound of metal being cut underneath), do not approach those involved. We have previously received reports of members of the public being assaulted by thieves and seriously injured when they tried to intervene. Call 999 from a safe distance and give us as much detail as you can instead.
For those following the planned development of Redhill Railway Station’s forecourt development planning inquiry this will be resuming on Monday 23rd November at Reigate Town Hall.
The inquiry will be sitting on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday at the town hall and on Wednesday they will be completing a site visit.
The Surrey Coalition of Disabled People attended the site to assess the practicalities of the moving of the taxi rank to the rear of the station and have produced a video which is below.
The redevelopment of the station will see the current forecourt area on the town centre side of the railway line feature of 200 flats in tower blocks of upto 15 floors. This will displace taxis to the rear of the station by the Toby Carvery on the very steep Redstone Hill.
Whilst it is understandable that some may say that they will redevelop the town side entrance with a new wider ramp which would be an improvement in access the fact that there is no where to drop off disabled or vulnerable people on this side of the station to access the ticket office.
The developer intends to install bus stops along Princes Road between the junction with Ladbroke Road and the station car park which is used by those wishing to use the A25 towards Godstone. This will compound the problems on Redstone Hill but spread the impact to a wider area. Local taxi drivers have reported that morning rush hour queues already can stretch back to the Nutfield Lodge with journeys taking upto 40 minutes.
The rear entrance is also on a road that is already heavily congested in the rush hour so with additional traffic seeking to enter the rear forecourt this will add to the congestion too.
Whilst the Surrey Coalition of Disabled People and local resident Robin Whitwell have mentioned the impact on disabled people this will have it has the potential to impact more of us. Robin went on to say that “none of us expect to become disabled, we can be fit and well one day but suddenly that can change. We need to plan for the future taking into consideration the facilities we and others may need either now or in the future. If we get this infrastructure correct with items like adequately sized lifts this can also help others within our community such as those with reduced mobility, those with luggage or with pushchairs.
The current position of the taxi ranks provides a great interchange between different modes of transport [bus, rail and taxis] all on the same side of the railway whilst also providing additional support to the towns visitors and workers. This redevelopment will increase congestion and despite a new ramp on the town side will present increased challenges to the disabled.”
Whitebushes Village hall recently hosted the monthly community cuppa coffee morning (held on the third Saturday of the month between 11:00 and 12:30).
This month we were joined by Salfords & Sidlow Parrish Councillors Stephen and Jim as well as our County Councillor Catherine Baart who spoke about what a Parrish / Town Council does.
The local government reorganisation, a move that the Prime Minister and his cabinet are pushing, will see a reduction in the number of councillors we have moving forward in the new unitary East Surrey Council which will take over the services currently provided by Surrey County Council (SCC), Tandbridge District Council, Reigate & Banstead (R&BBC), Mole Valley District Council, Epsom & Ewell Borough Council and Elmbridge Borough Council provides.
Having a parish council, whose councillors do now attract any allowance, will allow us a local voice on local issues as a statutory consultant in issues such as planning and they also offer a range of other local support based on local needs. This local voice is important when the new unitary comes into place with councillors in North West Elmbridge representing areas as far away as Walton of Thames or even Weybridge not understanding the changes we face or vice versa. Yes there is a small charge for the parish or town council but this is around 60p for a band D property per week so will be less for many residents. The proposed extension of Salfords Sidlow Parish council would like to extend their area to cover Whitebushes and Royal Earlswood Park on our side of the railway and upto the recycling centre area on the western side of the railway. Upto 8 new parish Councillors for the new areas would, as present, be elected. Salfords and Sidlow Parish Councillors are pleased to announce that they have been and still currently all independent councillors.

The Council has agreed to consult on recommendations that could see every household in the borough represented by a parish or town council.
These are based on feedback from local organisations and residents during the first stage of our community governance review earlier this year.
The proposals are for:
• Banstead and The Villages Council
• Horley Town Council
• Redhill and Reigate – either one large or two separate town councils
• Salfords, Sidlow and South Earlswood Parish Council
Whether you support these, or prefer an alternative, have your say and help decide how the interests of your community will be represented in the years to come.

Understanding the options for Whitebushes residents summary by Help in the bushes.
As seen in the recent post devolution is coming which means that services provided by Borough, District and County Councils across Surrey will be merged and provided by one of two unitary councils. The East Surrey unitary council will cover the areas served by Tandbridge, Reigate & Banstead, Mole Valley, Epsom & Ewell and Elmbridge.
A number of areas across this large area have a town or parish council that support local communities and run a range of services using their local knowledge to help best support the local area. There are a range of proposals to role these out in more areas to ensure that local needs are met regardless of whether you are in Hersham or Lingfield or the many communities like ours in the middle.
So what are the options for Whitebushes?
Listed in no particular order:
Option A: We join a new town council covering both Reigate & Redhill
Option B: We join a new town council covering Redhill (Reigate would have a separate town council)
Option C: We join an expanded Salfords and Sidlow Parish Council
Option D: We do not join a parish or town council and rely on the unitary authority only.
Each option has its benefits for options A-C however we need to remember that town and parish councillors are able to deal with a lot of local issues and have input into wider issues across the unitary authority area which a unitary authority councillor based miles away may lack the specific local knowledge that town and parish councils have.
Looking at a number of these town and parish councils that are currently operating they are also provide a range of local services as seen with events in Horley, Nutfield and Salfords by their respective local town/parish council. Likewise with the transfer of assets under Surrey County Council or District/Borough Councils some of these may be able to be passed onto new and existing town and parish councils to continue the great work done in local communities.
Whilst we were not given an option to vote on two or three unitary councils. This is an important opportunity to decide if we want to have a local authority under the town or parish council remit to support local people as the new unitary authorities will see the ratio of residents to councillor significantly reduced. Therefore the question is do we want a local parish or town councillors that can work to support the local communities whilst ensuring access to local representation is maximised and local needs are able to be more tailored to meet the differing local needs across our so to be much significantly larger East Surrey unitary council community area.

on Tuesday 11th November between 11:30 and 12:30 there will be an opportunity to speak to specialists about antisocial behaviour at The Brow (by the shop) on Whitebushes

We wish to highlight disruption to traffic in Reigate between the Morrisons crossroads and Priory Park where the Southbound carriageway has been closed. Local back streets are congested so it is best to avoid narrower roads/lanes until Virgin Media complete the manhole cover repairs.
As traffic is still heading past the cinema there is significant build up of traffic trying to get to Morrisons or turn right to return to the one way system.

Yesterday central government announced the plan for the introduction of devolution coming to Surrey in 2027.
There were three proposals put forward:
1. Reigate & Banstead merge with Crawley Council (with Tandridge and Mole Valley invited by declined to join)
2. The Surrey County Council proposed scheme with two councils covering Surrey shown in the picture.
3. A 3 council area with Spelthorne, Runnymede and Elmbridge creating a NW Surrey Council with other councils following the East and West Surrey divide shown.
There were concerns raised about the unserviceable debts of Woking incurred under a previous administration which is £2.5 billion. In making the statement with the final set up Central Government are reported to have allowed a £500 million write off but naturally it is important that we have firm assurances that the remaining £2 billion is written off as we do not want to see residents in other areas pick up the bill for the poor planning and redevelopment plans Woking borough Council made. Hopefully further news will be forthcoming from central government about the remaining debts.
So as you may have gathered from the picture the 2 unitary council option was selected by Central Government. This means that there are meant to be elections in May 2026 to the new shadow unitary council giving those Councillors an opportunity to look at the best ways to both divide the Surrey County Council services that will be provided by the unitary authorities & how to merge the services provided by the various Borough & District councils. In 2027 the new unitary councils will formerly take over all the responsibility for the existing councils services with the existing councils disbanded.
We need to be clear and honest in the discussions around these changes as each existing council in Surrey will have contracts for various services so full integration will take time especially if you look at standardisation of service standards and the provision of one service provider (either in-house or subcontracted) for the new unitary council area.
This journey will take time to complete however there is a lot of potential to take the best practice and standards from the existing councils to improve services and cost effectiveness. A couple of examples include:
As more information comes to light we will share
more information but we need to ensure as smooth a transition for local residents/workers and businesses whilst also doing everything possible to provide support to the staff impacted by these changes to continue to provide services to a good standard, but equally importantly trying to retain the vast experience and knowledge our local authority staff have.
The relationships that service users have with their council staff are important in the same way that having a good relationship with our GP with them providing a continuity of care can be helpful. We must work hard to try and retain the staff that have developed a good understanding of residents needs are retained. For those with additional needs these good working relationships can be important to help across various accessing of services or support.

Did you know there is a free to use outdoor gym in the park by Woodhatch angel crossroads?

There is a group buying heat pump scheme called Switch Together, launched by SCC at the start of September with an article in Surrey Matters in October.
I have only just become aware of from Energy Action Redhill and Reigate. It is for homeowners and the closing date is November 14th, so very soon.
Also, I wondered whether the Warm Homes Grant launched at the start of September by SCC will be useful for some local residents. This is for low income households.

Our last day in The Belfry is today 🚛 (27/09/2025)
Although the library here is now looking somewhat bare, please rest assured that until closing today you can still pop in to borrow, reserve and return books as usual, and until our public PCs shut down at 4.45pm, you can still use our PCs, and printing and photocopying services. At 5pm, however, we close for two weeks while we shift all our books and other items over to The Warwick Quadrant, where we will re-open on Saturday 11 October. We are very excited about being back in our old premises, which have now been completely refurbished with a new bright modern look, lots of new books, and plenty of activities and events in the coming months, and are really looking forward to seeing you there!
Before we go, however, we would like to extend a big THANK YOU to The Belfry Shopping Centre for being so welcoming and taking such good care of us during our temporary stay! 🙏 The support from The Belfry's office, maintenance and security staff has been amazing, and thoroughly appreciated.

This is a gentle reminder that a number of bus routes will see timetable changes and some route changes from today.
Routes impacted include 100,400,420,424,460 which have new timetables.
From today route 100 will see most services terminate at Redhill Bus Station instead of Park 25. Heading south it with divert after the Crossoak Lane bus stop via Hoadley Road to West Vale park before continuing to Court Lodge. Service frequencies will increase to upto 4 per hour.
New timetable on Route 400 sees this route increase to a half hourly service to compensate for the rerouted 100 service from Crossoak Lane to Brighton road with 4 buses and Hour along the A23 when timetables read in conjunction with routes 420/460.
Routes 420/460 minor timetable adjustments to improve reliability.
Route 422 withdrawn
Route 424 major changes including some services backfilling the void for Park 25.
We are aware that the Sunday timetable on the 460 is still not covering enough of the day to facilitate days out or support shift workers at Gatwick. We accept that one bus an hour in each direction through the estate is not conducive to encouraging higher ridership and we are campaigning for better service frequencies over a wider part of the day seven days per week.
Our previous campaigning saw the 100 become a 24 hour bus route and also saw the extended hours of operation on the 460 introduced. We believe that our campaigning to Metrobus as well as representation on a bus forum group with the County Council can help us secure a better service provision including improved accessibility to public transport for those with reduced mobility in the future.

Tonight at a full council meeting one of the issues discussed was a vote of no confidence in the leadership of Reigate & Banstead Borough Council. Recently there have been a reduction in the number of seats held by the Conservative Party councillors and this lead to this vote of no confidence to review of whether the council should remain led by the Conservatives or a cross party team to ensure that it was best prepared for the transition to the new unitary authority which will take on the work of the Borough/District and County Councils.
A range of concerns were brought into the debate including items being sent to the executive without debate and then decisions made by the executive including one case example where a resident who had professional expertise in the field was not given the opportunity to give her statement/evidence.
Other concerns about the rate of some services which had delays in delivery were raised including the fact that some years ago there were discussions on upgrading the waste and recycling services vehicles to be either electric or biofuel. Whilst there has been a recent adoption on biofuels for these vehicles there was a feeling that more action considering the timeline should have occurred.
There was also concerns at the speed that the Harlequin Theatre works by the Borough Council have taken especially when compared to the Surrey County Council library in the same building. It was felt that the Borough Council should have been much further down the project timeline to remove and replace the RAAC which forced its closure.
42 councillors attended the meeting with 20 voting in favour of the vote of no confidence in the leadership, 21 voted against and 1abstained. The vote of no confidence was therefore no successful.
Following the vote Cllr Biggs, leader of the council, acknowledged a lot of work needed to be done and furthermore appreciated that the vote result show that there was work that needed to be done to address the issues raised at the meeting.

Age Concern Merstham, Reigate and Redhill are looking for volunteer minibus drivers. please see the attached poster.

We want to remind you that our Community Cuppa takes place this coming Saturday at the village hall on Masons Bridge Road between 11:00 and 12:30

A series of changes are planned to launch on 27th September full details on the Metrobus website on the link below.
For Whitebushes residents the biggest change will be a slight change to the timetable for the existing 460 route which sees minor timetable adjustment to allow for time at boarding and alighting at bus locations on the route to improve the punctuality of services compared to the timetable.
Changes to services at East Surrey Hospital.
Route 100
- This service will operate up to every 15 minutes
- Park 25 will be served by a limited service on the 100 route however route 424 will serve Park 25 instead of terminating at the bus station.
- The100 will divert after the Crossoak Lane stop to serve Westvale Park via the new access route from by the staggered junction.
Route 400
- Increases in frequency to half hourly running providing additional services to help mitigate the impact of the route 100 changes south of the Crossoak Lane junction. This is something that local resident Robin Whitwell called for resulting in 4 buses (2 x route 400 Caterham to East Grinstead, 1 x 420 Sutton to Crawley and 1 x 460 Epsom to Crawley services) operating down the most direct route to the airport, Manor Royal and Crawley.
Please note due to the sinkhole issues at Godstone Metrobus are currently having to allow additional time to complete the diversion route and hope to be in a position to offer better spacing between routes 400,420 and 460 services on the section of the route between Redhill and Crawley via the A23 through Horley when these major roadworks are completed.
Route 420
- Minor changes
Route 422
- Withdrawn replaced by other services.
Route 424
- Revised timetable and minor route changes including now terminating at Park 25
Route 460
- Minor timetable changes to improve service punctuality.
Additional changes available on the website
We are currently trying to push for enhanced services to the estate and will update you when we have news. In the meantime please where possible remember to use the nearest bus stops to generate the passenger figures for those stops such as Bushfield Drive and Spencer Way as this strengthens our case for service improvements.
If you are using the local metrobus services please note that they offer a local Reigate and Redhill Metrorider ticket for £3.40 for multiple buses in an hour or £6.00 for an all day ticket via their app or slightly more from the driver (prices quoted are the adult fare) This includes Salfords Church as the boundary stop if heading South. They also offer a Metrovoyager ticket from £8.90 on the app or slightly more from the driver which gives you access to as many buses as you want on their network. Please check the ways to pay section of the website for more information.

The first week of the planning inquiry has now concluded and the second half will resume in November.
A lot of evidence was given on the impact on disabled and vulnerable people within the proposal which will see a loss of easy interchange between buses and taxis due to the proposed relocation of taxis and drop off/pick up zone to the rear entrance of the station on Redstone Hill Away from the manned ticket office.
Speakers from Shop Mobility, Redhill, Reigate and District Rail Users Association, The Surrey Coalition for Disabled People as well as local residents including Whitebushes own Robin Whitwell gave evidence on the impact of the changes.
Robin highlighted whilst the replacing of steps at the town centre side entrance replacing it with a ramped access is an improvement the overall impact of the changes will significantly impact disabled and vulnerable people. He also highlighted how the current railway station taxi rank not only supports the railway station but also the bus station and town users.
He also raised safety concerns over the steps and tunnel under the railway between the Toby Carvery and The Rise stating it is not disabled friendly and even the two ladies he spoke to did not feel it was a safer route to use even at lunchtime on a lovely sunny summers day.
If reading about this proposed redevelopment you will see references to site A and site B. Site A is the front entrance overlooking the bus station, current taxi rank and the town. Site B is platform 3 side of the station by the Toby carvery on Redstone Hill.

🤳 On Sunday, September 7, the national Emergency Alert System test will sound at 3pm.
Mobiles will emit a loud siren and vibrate - even if they're set to silent.
Surrey's Police and Crime Commissioner Lisa Townsend is now sharing more on how the alerts can be disabled on “lifeline” secret phones hidden by domestic abuse survivors.
Preventing violence against women and girls is a key priority, both for the Commissioner and for Surrey Police.
Lisa said: “Many victims may purposefully keep a secret phone as a vital lifeline.
"I urge any abuse survivors with a hidden phone to follow the Government's instructions below.”
👇
To opt out:
Depending on the manufacturer and software version of your phone, emergency alerts settings may be called different names, such as ‘wireless emergency alerts’ or ‘emergency broadcasts’.
The settings can usually be found in one of the following ways. Go to:
Then turn off ‘severe alerts’, ‘extreme alerts’ and ‘test alerts’.

As a website and group run by the community for the community we have for the last 20 months been working to promote inclusion and enabling the community spirit to grow.
Despite the hot weather this year the Kiln Community Gardens and pond on Ambleside Close have come along a long way during their seasons on the first Saturday of the month. We have also seen smaller projects across the estate with residents make an incredible display despite the weather challenges.
Thank you to all those that have really turned parts of the estate into a great display and colour.
This year we have also change the name of the coffee morning on the third Saturday of each month between 11:00 & 12:30 at the village hall from Whitebushes warm welcome to “Community Cuppa” which we hope will make it more appealing to more residents as we appreciate the rich history of the area as well as the fact that historically we were three different areas with Whitebushes, Bushfield Shaw and Spencer Meadows which are often new referred to as Whitebushes. We hope that this name change will see more people pop along for a cuppa and a chat at the coffee morning to get to meet others from across these three areas each with their own impressive history.
We would like to thank those that have come to the events we have had on the estate and to those coordinating these projects/events too. We have had some support from a few other groups too including but not limited to Redhill Football Club and the YMCA ybus.
We would like to continue to grow the work we do but this needs us to recruit more volunteers - if you would like to help us improve the community we live in please pop along to the Community Garden or Pond on the first Saturday of the month (excluding January) or to the community cuppa to find out more.
If you are connected with any groups, clubs or event organisers please also let them know about this website. The more people that know about the site the better as we naturally don’t have contacts for every club or group so please recommend the free advertising we offer to event organisers, clubs, support groups etc that may benefit from being mentioned on this website. We have expanded the events listings to cover the whole of East Surrey and any displaced groups that used to meet or perform at The Harlequin. This is a free service that we offer but the geographical area covered also opens up some unique opportunities for residents to experience in East Surrey including the miniature railway in Leatherhead.
Finally thank you for visiting the site.

Our local age concern branch have asked us to share this opportunity to help them support the community

The UK government is testing the Emergency Alerts system on Sunday 7 September 2025 at 3pm.
Compatible mobile phones and tablets will receive an alert, make a loud siren-like sound and vibrate. You will not need to take any action.
The Emergency Alerts system is used to warn if there’s a danger to life nearby, including extreme weather. Regular testing ensures the system is functioning correctly, should it need to be used in a life-threatening emergency.

Following the recent roadworks on Reigate Hill towards the town we are pleased to confirm that the road has reopened

Redhill Library Transformation
We are pleased to share an update on the refurbishment works at Redhill library, which is entering the final phase of work. These refurbishment works are all part of modernising libraries, which are hubs in the heart of our communities, providing support and activities based on local needs, all under one roof. Our aim is to provide:
These are all improvements which have been requested by residents and will modernise the space, making it fit for the future.
What happens to the library service during the refurbishment period?
The current temporary library space at The Belfry will close from Saturday 27 September 2025, to allow for the relocation of library stock and equipment. Throughout this closure period, approximately 2 weeks, customers can use any of our other libraries including the nearest which are Horley, Merstham and Reigate libraries. All loans will be extended for the duration of the closure period. We are expecting the refurbishment to be completed in early October. We will communicate the reopening date to our customers through our normal channels and through social media.
We look forward to welcoming you to your refurbished library.

We have been made aware of new speed cameras being installed on the A25 at Buckland. As seen with the cameras by McDonalds at Earlswood and other locations the new speed cameras are very discrete.
If you are not aware some modern speed cameras/ signal cameras can also detect other offences such as speed belt non compliance or use of hand held mobile phones whilst driving

This weekend sees a nice busy weekend of activities in the local area.
Help in the bushes invite you to the Community Cuppa at the village hall between 11:00 and 12:30

Please note there is no parking on-site. If driving please park responsibly as the fire station is still operational during the open day.
In the evening there is a car cruise in Redhill from 19:00 (details on the events page)

Please be aware that this morning we have been made aware of a serious road traffic collision on the A23 closing the road between the junctions of Three Arch Road and Woodlands Road.
Based on comments received this may be a prolonged closure whilst the emergency services deal with the incident and then the road is cleared.
Naturally our thoughts go out to those involved and thanks to the emergency services responding including the Kent,Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance.
Surrey Police advise avoiding the area if possible.
Metrobus services are currently on diversion via Woodhatch and are experiencing delays along the diversion route.

We’ve recently been made aware of individuals visiting homes unannounced, encouraging residents to make disrepair claims against Raven.
These people may falsely claim to be from a charity, “from housing”, or say they have a legal team. They might ask you to sign documents promising compensation or repairs.
If you're unhappy with any aspect of our service, including how we’ve handled a repair, you don’t need to go through a solicitor to get issues sorted or even to claim compensation. You can use our complaints process to resolve your issue.

With summer holiday season in full swing, holiday makers are flocking in droves to the airports, the beach, and far-flung areas of the UK for some much-needed downtime with friends or family.
But before you build those holiday memories, have you first built a burglar-proof home?
When you’re running through that pre-holiday checklist, make sure to add these to your list:

Residents may be aware for a number of years there has been a desire of Solum (owned in a partnership between Kier Property & Network Rail) to redevelop the station and surrounding Network Rail owned land.
Planning has been applied for on multiple occasions but refused repeatedly. On the last application there were over 2,000 objections to their proposals, which caused Reigate & Banstead Borough Council’s website some challenges due to the scale of the feedback. The application was refused again.
Solum have now taken this to the next step an inquiry which will be held in September. The local residents have launched a campaign to protect the station and surrounding areas. (Posters attached).
It is important to put this development into context
The developer wants to built 255 apartments on the site in tower blocks of up-to 15 storeys. The light for comparison is max 8 floors.
These blocks would be built on the station car park and forecourt including the taxi rank that also serves the town centre and bus station very well from its current location.
The new much smaller taxi rank will be on the Redstone Hillside of the station adjacent to platform 3, but the number of taxis able to fit on this rank will reduce by approximately 75% and when rail replacement bus services are operating the facility will not be available.
Solum says £6,000,000 will be spent on the station but this includes removal of redundant buildings on the Redstone Hill side of the station and a newly remodelled welcome building on the town side. There will only be machines on the side where taxis can set down yet the ticket office will be on the side of the station where taxis can not stop to help the less mobile members of the community to access it.
As a significant interchange station to the GWR services to Reading and Southern to Reigate and Tonbrdge it is amazing that this plan fails to provide for rail replacement service space for passengers to queue, space for the loading and unloading of buses potentially going in 4 directions and sufficient spaces for buses/coaches on their mandatory breaks In accordance with driving hours restrictions.
There is an alternative.
There is no disputing that we needs more homes but they need to be built in the right place to support the local community, of the right type/capacity, truly affordable and also seeing an increase in social rented accommodation that has seen stock levels decrease following years of right to buy without a need to replace the stock that was sold under that scheme.
We also need Train operators and Solum (Network Rail & Kier Properties) to work closer together to promote rail better. This station serves a large urban and rural area so the station car park is not just another car park and taxi rank but a critical part to the intermodal methods of travel that people including those in rural areas without public transport, therefore we need to be raising the game for encouraging more people to use active travel and public transport where it is practical.
On the current town side forecourt there is the space for a bus station similar in design to the proposed on in Crawley with 10-11 stops to be constructed allowing more buses to use their dedicated stop (a massive help for those less mobile residents or those with shopping, pushchairs etc) or alternatively a nose in set up on one side like Horsham and the same angled bays seen at East Surrey Hospital to support the operation of dual door buses as seen on route 405. There is potential for this site to also be able to handle the bus stand need of scheduled services and some rail replacement capacity without additional access onto the local road network to get to and from the stands on Marketfield Way. There is no reason why an elevated car park could not be constructed above the new bus station to serve the needs of those from rural areas connecting to national rail services.
The taxi rank could be retained and the facilities for active travel also improved with an enlarged pedestrian plaza by a step free access railway station ticket hall, secure cycle parking facilities and potentially even showers provided as offered at Gatwick for staff who cycle to work.
The current bus station area could be opened up as a community space, with some 20min pick up bays for the station, a couple disabled bays (complimenting the station parking and other locations around town), private hire vehicle bays to service the Roadrunners’s office and properly allocated parking area for the delivery riders that does not cause an obstruction.
Further details to follow in due course.

Following the announcement of the £4.5 million pound investment for the Harlequin Theatre RAAC removal the following statement has been released by Cllr Jonathan Essex on behalf of the Green Party Councillors:
Green councillors have strongly stated their disappointment that no additional money will be allocated to pay for ongoing improvements to the Harlequin theatre in Redhill.
They welcomed the commitment at last night’s (Tuesday July 22) meeting of Reigate & Banstead Borough Council to reopen the Harlequin by Christmas 2026, spending up to £4.5million to remove and replace the RAAC-ridden roof.
However, a Green amendment asking for an additional £3million to pay for maintenance and improvements – such as refurbishing the stage and improving energy efficiency to reduce energy bills – was rejected.
Cllr Jonathan Essex (Redhill East), who proposed the amendment, said the additional money would allow the flexibility to carry out improvements and repairs as needed, rather than having to go back to council to ask for more money later on.
“Now that we’re committed to removing the roof it makes sense to do other work that would add value to the Harlequin in the long term,” Cllr Essex said. “If we don’t commit this extra money now we risk delaying progress on the work.”
Cllr Essex disputed claims by Conservative councillors that this would add to the time taken to reopen the theatre. “That’s a misrepresentation; I just want us to ensure we don’t do only the RAAC-related repairs but also have enough money for other elements of restoring the building for public use.”
Green Cllr Victoria Chester (Horley East & Salfords) also spoke at the meeting. “We’re just trying to get more bang for our buck, using time and money in the most efficient manner by doing other work at the same time. It’s just common sense,” she said.
“There’s no point making the building secure if we don’t have a proper stage and technical equipment to make the Harlequin fully operational. We shouldn’t shoot ourselves in the foot by turning down the amendment when we have the chance to do more with the money we have.”

You may have received a leaflet or seen on bus stops or social media a consultation on the setting up of a new local authority to replace all Borough and District Councils as well as County Councils. A consult Is being held be central government to help them decide which proposal to go ahead with.
Surrey County Council supported by Mole Valley District Council and Elmbridge Borough Council prefer the option of two new authorities with Tandbridge, Reigate & Banstead, Mole Valley and Elmbridge being in the new East Surrey authority. The remaining being in West Surrey
However 9 District and Borough Councils proposed a three authority set up. This would be:
East Surrey:
North Surrey
West Surrey
The nine Borough and District Councils believe that the two option that SCC proposes will make areas too larger and therefore lack the local knowledge that the new authority will have. Localism is important in understanding local needs and community priorities as how will someone in Horley know what the community in Elmbridge will need or on the west the very different challenges that Waverley and Spelthorne have.
Whilst the printed media has focused on the two options is important that we as residents we voice our opinions on what we think will deliver the best results moving forward in terms of local government services.
Subsequent to the new authority being set up in May’s election the following year an election for the Mayor for the new strategic body (which I can probably best compare to the work done by the Mayor of London and City Hall / TfL staff including the new Police and Crime Commissioner) will be held. The geography of that area is yet to be confirmed.
Please make sure you get any feedback in by the end of the consultation using the official consultation online social media comments I’ll not be counted despite concerns being raised there.

Please note the temporary closure for just under 2 weeks in September to allow the Hanger9 cafe to complete maintenance and improvements works.

Research has found that 1 in 4 people don’t receive the palliative care and support they need at the end of life, and that can mean a lack of support, financial stress, and loss of dignity.
At Marie Curie, we believe everyone deserves the best possible care and support at the end of their life.
That’s why we have partnered with gas distribution company SGN to help those in the last year of their lives, roughly and their carers access grants to help them with rising energy and gas bills.
As part as our commitment to transforming end of life care in the UK, we have launched our service, Community Companions, in the East Surrey area.
This free service entails our trained volunteers, known as Companions, befriending individuals who are terminally ill or categorised as elderly and frail and are experiencing loneliness. Companions can meet with individuals in their own homes or out in the community at a coffee shop, the park etc.
If you are interested in making a referral to our service to be matched up with one of our friendly companions or have any questions, please emailsouthcompanions@mariecurie.org.uk
Please note that this has also been added to the support groups pages if you or someone you know need to access this service at a later date
We’re consulting on proposed changes to how much people pay for care delivered at home or in the community, to bring us in line with national guidance and help keep services sustainable.

Help in the bushes as a community run website are keen to promote the work done by local groups and offer event organisers an opportunity to list their groups or events for free on the website.
we are aware that for a number of years our local theatre, The Harlequin in Redhill has been closures due to the presence of RAAC including in the auditorium roof. As a result we have been trying to also reach out to all the local groups that used the Harlequin prior to its closure to allow them to use the site to advertise their events here. I am pleased to announce that YESPA the youth part of East Surrey Performing Arts has come forward in response to our offer of free listings. Their show whilst slightly outside of our normal coverage is being offered as we are keen to support those organisations that would be normally using The Harlequin. We invite you to email webmaster@helpinthebushes.co.uk if you are running an event or group and wish to have a free mention. Flyers/posters image are appreciated ideally in Jpeg format and restricted to one page. If you want additional information please include this in the email and we will add it next to the photo.

Help in the bushes wish to remember those that lost their lives in the London 7/7 attacks that occurred twenty years ago today which took away the lives of 52 people and injured over 700 more. Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of these individuals too.
We also remember those that run towards the danger to help the victims which included transport workers, the Doctors at the BMA in Russell Square, emergency services personnel (supported by British Red Cross, St John Ambulance and private ambulance companies) from across London and the surrounding counties, including ambulance crews from Surrey Ambulance Service (now part of Secamb) who attended King’s Cross, who experienced such overwhelming scenes. London came together with even members of the public supporting each other on that tragic day.
The attackers wanted hatred to divide us but it failed to do so, it brought people together in their time of need.
Twenty years later we remember that day, those that we lost, those that were injured, those that responded and those that treated the injured.

⚠️ Works are due to start on 7 July to mark out parking bays and install traffic calming measures to deter anti-social driving within Earlswood Lakes Car Park.⚠️
They are expected to take about two weeks to complete. We'll aim to minimise disruption but parking capacity will be reduced during this time. We ask for your patience while these essential works take place.

We are working hard to make bus travel more reliable, accessible, and sustainable for residents. Thanks to support from the Department for Transport through our Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), we’re introducing smarter ways to manage the road network and reduce disruption to public transport.
Our long-term goal is a transport system that works better for our communities and supports a greener future.
Each month, over 2,500 street works permit applications are processed in Surrey. Until recently, there was no single digital system to show how these works affected bus routes - making it difficult to manage emergency works or avoid multiple closures along the same corridor. This often-caused delays and frustration for passengers.
We’re now using the Causeway one.network platform, which gives us a real-time, digital map showing both roadworks and bus routes together.
This new tool helps us to:
The result? Fewer delays, better communication, and more dependable bus journeys for everyone.
Embracing digital tools like one.network is just one of the ways we are investing in a cleaner, more connected future.

Summer draws us all out of our homes. We get such a short window of good weather (let’s hope this week isn’t the last we see of the sun) that it feels like our duty to squeeze every last drop of Vitamin D-related joy out of it.
Will you be jumping on a plane this summer to chase the best of the sunshine, or staying in the UK and pitching a tent or loading up a campervan? Maybe you’re not going on holiday until later in the year, but have weekends filled with BBQs, weddings, festivals, and concerts instead.
Whatever you have in your diary this summer, it’s likely that you will be out of your house for longer than at any other time of year. Unfortunately, this is good news for opportunist burglars looking to make a quick win.
Burglaries don’t just happen at Christmas, so we wanted to remind you of some key burglary prevention tips to guide you through the coming months:
Even the smallest pieces of evidence can help build a bigger intelligence picture. If you have CCTV footage or images of suspicious behaviour that you think we should know about, submit it to be reviewed through our suspicious activity portal.
You can report a burglary to us online here. In an emergency, always call 999.

We've been made aware of cold callers knocking doors in the Merstham area claiming to be from Raven, encouraging people to sign up to wifi. These people do not work for Raven.
If someone knocks your door, always ask for ID. Our Raven staff will always have official identification, and will be happy to show it. If you have any concerns please call Customer Services on 0300 123 3399 to check.

A major new campaign to keep Surrey’s town centres safe over the summer has launched.
The Home Office-backed Safer Streets Summer Initiative will see a focus on the busiest areas of the county to bolster crime prevention and community safety.
Increased patrols and specially-designed operations will take place in locations spanning the county, including Staines and Addlestone in the north, Farnham and Camberley in the west, Dorking further to the south, and Caterham in the east.
Across each of the locations, targeted activity is planned until September to tackle the crime types that typically increase over the summer months.
This includes:
💃 Plain-clothed patrols in nightspots
🛒 Clamping down on retail crime
🚸 Supporting young people
🛵 Tackling crime enabled by motorbikes
❌ The proactive use of anti-social behaviour powers
This week is national Anti-Social Behaviour Awareness Week. Anti-social behaviour is a key priority for the county’s Safer Neighbourhood Teams throughout the year, and more information on how to report anti-social behaviour or access help can be found here.
Police and Crime Commissioner Lisa Townsend said: “This type of visibility is what residents have told me they want to see.
“The aim isn’t simply police enforcement – it's collaboration, and we aim not only to respond to crime, but to prevent it altogether."

More information on activity in your community will be reported over the summer. Follow your local Surrey Police Beat account on social media channels to keep up-to-date.
